Corn Rent Act, 1836 - collected account. Since the Middle Ages, parishioners had to give a tithe, one tenth of their crops, animal produce etc., to the church. The Tithe Commutation Act, or Kendal Corn Rent Act, of 1836 enabled the payment to be made in cash. This required the drawing up of a large scale map of a parish with a detailed schedules of land ownership, including field names, culture and sizes. The call number in Kendal Record Office for the map and schedule for Longsleddale is WQ/R/C 11. The following entries are mostly taken from the summary, called the Collected Account, and are only those estates which contain houses, but the person named as "occupier" may have only worked the land and not lived at the house.
