Land Tax - Longsleddale
|
The Land Tax was introduced by an Act of Parliament in 1690, and collected from 1697 to 1813. Assessments were for "granting Aid to his Majesty's Service by a Land Tax". The rate for 1773 was 3 shillings in the pound. After 1772 the returns included a list of occupiers of the land in each parish, and later used to establish voting rights, but named estates may not always indicate the house where the occupier of the land actually lived. From 1792 landowners could pay a lump sum and be exonerated from the annual tax. Records for 1773, 1808, 1823, 1830 and 1831 have survived and are available in the Kendal Record Office, call number WQ/R/LT. Where the same property is mentioned several times at the same date, we have numbered them (1), (2) .... just to distinguish the entries.
